The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has warned that the Department of Defense’s (DOD) extremely expensive satellite laser communications technology program remains untested and should not proceed until it is proven to work. GAO reports: “Despite these challenges, DOD plans to continue to develop and launch hundreds of satellites worth billions of dollars that require the use of laser communications. We recommended that DOD fully demonstrate the technology's capabilities before investing further, among other things.”
